Inevitably a week with little to report is followed by one with lots. I guess I should have written more last week.
Cody is now 4 lbs 4oz. He had a bit of a scare this week. On Wednesday his body temperature was a little low and we thought he may be getting sick. He ended up back in an incubator and on oxygen for a couple of days. By the end of the week he was moved back to a crib, and is off the O2 and is eating from a bottle again. Why such a big jump for a slightly low body temp? Check out Kian... Ever wonder how big the giraffe is that Cody has? We took
this photo to show you. It really shows you how big
he was, and
how far he has come.
Kian is now 5 lbs 2oz. Mindy noticed on Monday night Kian was lethargic and not interested in eating very much. On Tuesday we received a call saying he wasn't acting like himself and they were going to run some tests. By the time I got in to the NICU after work Kian had two IV lines, was back under a heated incubator and was on 1.5 liter flow of oxygen. The doctors ran tests on all three boys, which we found out the next day everything came back negative. It was not till Thursday that we found out Kian was positive for
Parainfluenza type 3. It was pretty obvious by then as he was having trouble breathing past all the mucus and congestion. By the end of the week he seems to be doing much better. He is no longer under the heater, his IV lines were removed, he is more alert then he was, and he is eating again. He seems to be past the worst of the cold. We hope next week will be much better for him.
Spencer is now over 6 lbs! He has been eating and growing but still needs help breathing from a c-pap machine. We were really concerned that Spencer not get sick as his lungs can't handle it right now. He had some labs run last week that showed his blood gasses looking better, and he was not sick. He does still have chronic lung disease (aka
Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia). In all likelihood Spencer will outgrow the lung disease eventually as lungs continue to grow until you are about 8 years of age. There is a chance if he does good enough with everything else he may end up coming home on oxygen. We don't know if he will be better in a week, a month, or years. If he doesn't get better before his lungs stop growing then he will likely have this condition for life.
